Ben and Boy

Ben padded the streets often, looking for things to make Boy happy, never resting too long. Ben worried about Boy a lot, but Boy always made reassuring sounds. Happy sounds, thought Ben. Boy was Ben's kin, his only family and Boy was otherwise alone.

At night time, Ben would wrap himself around Boy. He did not want Boy to be cold, it was important. Ben would stay alert at night, making sure to protect Boy, never really sleeping himself. Ben was selfless, he put boy first. Boy was Ben's kin, his only family and Boy was otherwise alone.

In the day time, Ben would bring Boy to the same place to play, every day. Ben liked this place, it made Boy happy. The air was fresh and there were others who seemed nice. Ben could worry less about Boy here, it felt safe.  Boy seemed keen to distract Ben from his worries here, playing frequently. Boy was Ben's kin, his only family and Boy was otherwise alone.

One morning, Boy awoke in the same doorway that he always slept in, to find his companion was not moving, cold. The creature that he had raised from a small pup was no longer breathing and Boy began to cry. Boy was overwhelmed at the realisation that the loyal animal he had called friend, family, was gone. He gingerly raised Ben up in his arms and brought him to the park. Ben loved the park, Boy brought him here every day to play, because he always wanted to make Ben happy.

Boy used his hands to dig a small hole for his rigid ally, by a small tree. He marked the spot with Ben's collar, wrapping it around a small branch. Boy said goodbye to Ben and left, alone, knowing that no creature on earth would ever love him as much as Ben had.
